Lauryn and fiance Jeremy celebrated their birthdays with a trip to Jamaica last fall.

After all this planning for one of the most memorable days of our lives, my fiancé Jeremy and I are already looking to keep the party going! In comes the next item on the checklist: booking the honeymoon.

Choosing a honeymoon destination felt like someone had plopped a world map in front of me and said, “Pick somewhere.”

Overwhelming doesn’t even begin to describe the experience. Naturally, I looked for advice from other newlyweds, and in rolled the recommendations: Hawaii, St. Lucia, Greece, Aruba, Jamaica, Europe, a Caribbean cruise, and even the Maldives. Where does one start with all of these beautiful locations?

Some recommendations came with valuable advice: Make time to spend a week away together immediately after the whirlwind wedding day, to relax, recharge and celebrate our new marriage. We liked the sound of that!

I recommend nailing down a budget before anything else. Once Jeremy and I decided on that, we found some Caribbean island trips within our price range. We wanted to be on the beach with unlimited access to frozen drinks!

We reached out to a handful of travel agents and found a great match working with Sarah at Those Who Wander Travel. In helping us narrow down our options, Sarah asked what features were important to us: Excursions? Room service? All-inclusive? Ease of travel? Water sports? Golf? Nightlife?

We provided our ideal vacation features:

  • Excursions. Jeremy and I vacationed in Jamaica last fall, and the times spent away from the resort snorkeling, climbing Dunn’s River Falls, and partying on a catamaran were our favorites.
  • Room service. It's something we didn’t get to enjoy in Jamaica. Always ask (even at all-inclusive resorts) if room service is included. We found out the hard way that's not always the case. We definitely want that, in case there's a rainy day or two in the middle of the trip or we want some extra zzz’s.
  • Easy travel. Omaha doesn't have a ton of seamless international travel options, and air travel to some of the resorts we considered required overnight layovers or two or more stops along the way. As a nervous traveler, I wanted the peace of mind that we were a plane ride away from paradise.

Sarah provided multiple all-inclusive options at gorgeous resorts. We landed on the Excellence El Carmen resort in the Dominican Republic. It will be our first trip to the DR and we are looking forward to the adventures we will share as Mr. & Mrs!
