Pairings could lead to state showdown

The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union announced its regional basketball pairings in Class 4-A and 5-A on Monday.

In 4-A, two-time defending state champion and top-rated Harlan Community was sent on a different path from third-rated Council Bluffs Lewis Central. The schools are 50 miles apart, and it’s possible that both teams could reach the state tournament at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines from Feb. 29 to March 5.

Each team has one state-rated team in its region. Lewis Central could meet No. 15 Dallas Center-Grimes in the Region 8 final, while Harlan could see No. 14 Spencer in the Region 1 final.

There are no state-rated teams from western Iowa in 5-A. Sioux City West has had the best season, but might have to beat state No. 1 Ankeny Centennial in the Region 1 final.

Here are the initial matchups for schools in The World-Herald’s western Iowa coverage area, with records through Sunday. All are 7 p.m. starts:

Class 4-A

Regional Quarterfinals

Wednesday, Feb. 17

Region 1: Denison-Schleswig (6-9) at Sioux City Heelan (7-8)

Region 7: Carroll (1-15) at Perry (8-9)

Region 8: Glenwood (9-7) at Creston (10-6)

Regional Semifinals

Saturday, Feb. 20

Region 1: Heelan/Denison winner at Harlan (15-1)

Region 8: Glenwood/Creston winner at CB Lewis Central (13-1)

Class 5-A

Regional Quarterfinals

Wednesday, Feb. 17

Region 1: Sioux City East (2-15) at Sioux City North (5-9)

Region 7: CB Thomas Jefferson (2-15) at CB Abraham Lincoln (5-11)

Regional Semifinals

Saturday, Feb. 20

Region 1: SC North/SC East winner at Sioux City West (14-3)
