Services are pending for Emmanuel “Motto’’ McLean, who died Wednesday.
The 93-year-old McLean was a well-known figure in the local hockey community. He played professionally for the Omaha Knights in the late 1940s and early ’50s before passing on his hockey knowledge to a generation of young players.
A member of the Omaha Hockey Hall of Fame, McLean’s years of service led the United Way to name him as its 1986 “volunteer of the year.’’
Four years later, the Hitchcock Park Ice Arena was renamed in his honor.
Arrangements are pending at Heafey, Hoffmann, Dworak and Cutler Mortuary.
The Nebraska 100: Our greatest athletes
The Nebraska 100, originally selected in 2005 and then updated and re-ranked in 2015, came from a pool of nearly 500 names from the ranks of high school, college, amateur and professional sports from the past 140 years. Assistance came from a panel of veteran sports observers from across the state, with the newspaper's sports staff determining the final rankings.
