Notes: Dove workshop, clay shoot Friday

Brush up on wing-shooting skills at the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission's dove workshop and clay shoot Friday at Platte River State Park.

The event, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Roger G. Sykes Outdoor Heritage Education Complex, will include hunting opportunities, strategies, equipment and recipes for the harvest. Participants should bring firearms and target loads (No. 7½ or smaller) for shooting blue rock following the workshop.

Iowa approves new bird rules

The Natural Resource Commission of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources approved the 2013-14 migratory game bird hunting seasons during its Aug. 8 meeting.

Some other items:

>> The possession limit for ducks and geese is now three times the daily bag limit.

>>  The daily bag limit for scaup is three.

>> The daily bag limit for canvasbacks is two.

>> The season on pigeons has been removed. It is now a continuous open season.

>> There is no bag limit for light geese during the Conservation Order.

Lewis and Clark Heritage Day is Saturday at Ponca State Park. The expedition passed through the Ponca area in late August more than 200 years ago. Activities include canoeing the Missouri National Recreational River with the National Park Service, educational programs presented by park staff, period games and crafts. Equipment will be provided. ... The Omaha Hiking Club is bringing a documentary film about hiking to Marcus Midtown Cinema on Sept. 12 at 7:30. “Mile... Mile & a Half” features the John Muir trail, which runs through the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range. Some local outfitters plan to bring discount coupons and items to raffle before the screening.
