GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — Central Arizona denied Iowa Western Community College a national baseball title Saturday, winning the National Junior College Athletic Association championship game 13-8.

This was the first title game loss for the Reivers, who had won championship game appearances in 2010, 2012 and 2014.

“Our sophomores are a special group,” said Iowa Western Coach Marc Rardin. “And they allowed us to overachieve this season. They let us create stuff with our offense and let us win 52 games.

“Central Arizona had only one more hit than we did. We did as well as we could.”

Iowa Western started out blazing, scoring seven runs in the top of the first inning. Jaden Rolffs' three-run home run was the big blow. Cooper Bowman, Ronald Sweeny, Gibson Krzeminski and Colin Kasperbauer drove in runs.

Sweeney added a sacrifice fly RBI in the sixth inning.

Central Arizona replied by scoring 10 runs in the first three innings and adding two more in the fifth and one in the sixth.

“We, and I mean our freshmen are already looking forward to 2020,” said Rardin.
