Go fishing

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission has set a date for their Fishing with Friends event.

Adults are invited to grab a buddy and join the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission at Lincoln’s Holmes Lake on Tuesday for Fishing with Friends.

This adult-based opportunity is a chance for like-minded individuals who have little or no fishing experience to learn some skills. Bait, equipment and instruction will be provided.

Beyond fishing, participants can learn how to clean fish and cook fish in a healthful manner. In addition, experts will be on hand to teach kayaking and kayak fishing. A vendor will be on-site with information on how to purchase a kayak. Kayaks will be provided. Kayakers must be at least 12 years old.

Fishing is set for 6 to 8 p.m. along the north shore by the fishing trailer. Adults will need a fishing license, which they can purchase at outdoornebraska.org. For the complete schedule of Game and Parks fishing events, visit outdoornebraska.gov/familyfishing.

Big game draw permits

Hunters have until Friday to apply for 2019 Nebraska big game draw permits.

Residents and nonresidents may apply for one deer permit, residents may apply for one elk permit, and residents and eligible landowners may apply for one antelope permit.

The draw permit units are: deer — Republican Mule Deer, Platte Mule Deer Conservation Area and Frenchman Mule Deer Conservation Area units; antelope — all firearm and muzzleloader units; elk — all units.

Paper applications must be received by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission by 5 p.m. — or by 11:59 p.m. for online applications — on Friday.

Governor’s turkey hunt

The Pine Ridge Wild Turkey Hunt Committee has announced that its annual autumn turkey hunt will be renamed the Governor’s Pine Ridge Wild Turkey Hunt.

“We are pleased to once again add the governor’s support and name to this long-held event,” committee chairman Carl Larsen said.

He then presented Gov. Pete Ricketts with a jacket that includes the Turkey Hunt’s new logo as well as the governor’s name.

This year’s hunt will take place Oct. 9 and 10 in the Chadron area. First held in the mid-1990s, the two-day, invitation-only hunt has welcomed many state, regional and national leaders over the years.

Ricketts took part in the event in 2018. He has proclaimed Nebraska as the best place to hunt turkeys in the United States on account of the abundance of the birds throughout the state, the ease of obtaining a permit and the state’s lengthy hunting seasons.

Free kayak clinics offered

The National Park Service is offering free kayak clinics on Wednesdays this summer starting June 26. Additional dates include July 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31 and August 7 and 14.

The clinics will take place on Lake Yankton from 9 a.m. to noon east of the fishing pier. They are open to persons age 12 to adult with no prior paddling experience.

“These clinics are an introduction to kayaking and provide visitors an opportunity to learn basic paddling skills and safety information related to the water sport,” said park ranger Teresa Mentzer with the Missouri National Recreational River.

Kayaks, equipment and personal flotation devices are provided.

To reserve a spot, please email MNRR508@gmail.com or call Mentzer at 605-665-0209 Ext. 29.

Deadline for reservations is at noon the day prior to the clinic date.
