YORK, Neb. — Haley Thiele is back to applying the hurt and not feeling it.

The Husker senior from Wahoo won her second Nebraska Women’s Amateur in three years. A final-round 76 at York Country Club completed a 54-hole score of 10-over 220, good for an eight-stroke victory over Aurora High senior-to-be Danica Badura.

“This is a huge confidence booster, one of my goals since summer of last year,’’ Thiele said in a Nebraska Golf Association video.

Hand and wrist injuries already had sidelined her a year in college. This past season, she played all 27 rounds for the Huskers while dealing with sporadic back pain.

This after she changed swing coaches and worked on a new swing. She said she resisted leaving the Husker lineup, because the team was playing well, and she wanted to keep playing.

After the Big Ten championship, she took a few weeks off.

“I hit it hard coming back, and it paid off,’’ she said.

On Friday, she had it rolling on the front nine with a 1-under 34. But she made two triple bogeys in the next three holes, as her lead over Badura and Husker teammate Kirsten Baete of Beatrice shrank to seven strokes.

Thiele bounced back with back-to-back birdies. The first was nearly an eagle.

“I had a great drive and needed to eagle or birdie to put those bad thoughts out of my mind,’’ she said. “It got me going again, and I birdied the next hole.”

Badura, who is committed to South Dakota, is the younger sister of new Nebraska men’s match-play champion Caleb Badura.
