YORK, Neb. — Husker golfer Haley Thiele of Wahoo began her bid for a second title in three years by taking a three-stroke lead after Wednesday’s first round of the 45th Nebraska Women’s Amateur.

Thiele birdied the 18th hole for a 2-over 72 at York Country Club, where tee times were delayed 90 minutes due to severe weather and heavy rains. NU teammate Megan Whittaker from Omaha is next with a 75.

Only five in the field of 20 broke 80. Defending champion Jordan York of Scottsbluff graduated last month from UNO and did not enter.

Bartels qualifies for U.S. Junior Amateur

GOTHENBURG, Neb. — UNO signee Josh Bartels of Lincoln was the only Nebraskan to advance from qualifying at Wild Horse Golf Club Tuesday for USGA junior championships.

Bartels turned back two non-Nebraskans, Alec Nachmann of Boca Raton, Florida, and Inigo Izuzquiza of Spain, by shooting 68 to win by two strokes.

The girls qualifiers were Julia Gregg of Farmers Branch, Texas, and Elle Nachmann of Boca Raton, Florida. Wahoo’s Lindsey Thiele is the first alternate.
