FREMONT, Neb. — Chadron State golfer Ricki Hickstein of Chadron ended the title bid of defending champion Nicolle Barmettler of Omaha at the Nebraska women’s match-play golf championship at Fremont Golf Club.

Hickstein was 1-down to Barmettler before winning three holes in a row for a 2-and-1 victory in the opening round. She will play Brandi Lemek of Doniphan, who ended her victory over Omaha Westside sophomore and 2018 Class A co-champion Kaitlyn Hanna with a birdie 3 on the third extra hole.

Others in Tuesday morning’s quarterfinals will be co-medalists Danica Badura of Aurora and Emily Karmazin of Omaha, NU sophomore Megan Whittaker of Omaha, Lincoln Southwest sophomore Kate Strickland, Creighton sophomore Kristin Goertz of Omaha and new state junior girls match-play champion Lauren Thiele of Wahoo.

Thiele birdied the first hole and never trailed against 18-time state champion Susan Marchese of Omaha in a 2-and-1 win. In 19-hole matches, Goertz beat Lincoln Pius X incoming freshman Nicole Kolbas and Strickland topped Southwest classmate Neely Adler.

Bartels in top 30 at U.S. Junior

At the U.S. Junior Amateur at Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio, UNO incoming freshman Josh Bartels from Lincoln Southwest is tied for 28th after the first of two qualifying rounds.

He played his final six holes in 3-under for a 2-over 73. The top 64 advance to match play on Wednesday.
