It came as no surprise to Zach Kuo that there was one break of serve in Saturday’s No. 1 singles final at the Elkhorn Invitational.
“When me and Isaac play, it’s always like nobody breaks each other. He has such a big serve,” Kuo said.
Kuo, an Elkhorn sophomore, was able to get that break in the 10th game against Elkhorn Mount Michael’s Isaac Gart, propelling Kuo to an 8-5 win.
Kuo didn’t have a lot of break-point chances, but he stayed patient.
“I hit the ball hard crosscourt and waited for the short ball and then I took advantage of those opportunities,” said Kuo, last year’s state runner-up in Class B.
Gart, who placed third at state last year, had break points on a pair of Kuo’s service games early in the match but couldn’t convert.
After Kuo went up 6-4 by breaking Gart, he finished off a two-deuce game with a forehand winner on his next service game. He won his final service game at love.
It’s been a great start to the prep season for Kuo as he also defeated Lincoln Pius X’s Mason Warner 8-4 on Thursday in a rematch of last year’s Class B final.
Elkhorn also got a win at No. 1 doubles Saturday as Jackson Habrock and Will Trausch won the final three games for an 8-5 win over Elkhorn South’s Smaran Marupudi and Michael Day.
Elkhorn South won both No. 2 singles and doubles.
