Garrett Hustedt

Garrett Hustedt recently received a walk-on offer from Nebraska to go with scholarship offers from schools in Division II and NAIA.

Elkhorn Mount Michael's Garrett Hustedt has dreamed of one day playing football in college, and that's inching closer to becoming reality.

Nebraska offered Hustedt a preferred walk-on spot Wednesday in the Huskers' 2019 recruiting class.

"For how much I have put in to football, I have always been hoping for that kind of result," said Hustedt, a 6-foot-2, 218-pound linebacker. "It was awesome to get that offer and it feels like it paid off."

Division II schools Augustana, Truman State and Minnesota State-Moorhead, along with NAIA Midland, have offered scholarships. He's taken game-day visits to Northwest Missouri state, Augustana and Minnesota State-Moorhead.

He won't be signing Wednesday when the early signing period begins.

"I want to weigh out all of my options and see where the process will take me," Hustedt said. "I want to take advantage of the process, and once I feel comfortable to make a decision, I will be ready."

He is planning visits to a handful of Division II schools in the coming weeks — Washburn (Dec. 10-11), UNK (Dec.12-13) and Truman State (Dec. 26). He's undecided if he'll take a visit to Wayne State on Dec. 19. He is also working on setting up official visits to Northwest Missouri State and Minnesota State.

Hustedt is being recruited as both an inside and outside linebacker. He led the Knights with 101 tackles (44 solo, 57 assisted) and sacks (8.5) this season.

"I think I have the speed to do both, but wherever the coaches put me is wherever I will play," Hustedt said.

To get ready for next level, Hustedt has been working on skill-specific drills with former Husker Vershan Jackson. He also knows his strengths and weaknesses.

"I need to get better at my conditioning and more consistent with every play," Hustedt said. "When I go on the field I have a drive and I love the game. My first step and always being able to have better anticipation I can get better at."
