BRLD holds on to keep Knights winless in ’19

Norfolk Catholic may be 0-4, but it’s a very good 0-4 team.

The Knights, who have played in six state finals — winning four — in the past nine seasons, lost to a fourth ranked opponent Friday.

BRLD, No. 1 in Class C-2, never trailed in a 40-32 win Friday. Norfolk Catholic’s other losses are to Pierce (No. 2 in C-1), David City Aquinas (No. 3 in C-2) and St. Paul (No. 2 in C-2).

BRLD led 32-17 after three quarters. Norfolk Catholic cut the deficit to 32-24 with 6:51 left and 40-32 at the 58-second mark. But in between, BRLD got a 24-yard scoring pass from Will Gatzemeyer to Lucas Vogt to stay in front.

Norfolk Catholic faces 0-4 Crofton next Friday.

Elsewhere in C-2, Sutton and defending state champ Centennial played a thriller and Sutton held on for a 43-35 win. Sutton, which lost its only regular-season game last year to the Broncos, led 35-21 before Centennial scored twice in the first three minutes of the fourth quarter. But Sutton scored the deciding TD with 4:38 left then secured the win by recovering a fumble inside its own 10 in the final minute.

Vikings give Aurora the boot

Aurora, the undefeated C-1 state champion last season, dropped to 1-3, but like Norfolk Catholic, has played a challenging schedule.

Aurora earlier lost to C-1 No. 3 Adams Central and No. 1 Wahoo. On Friday, it led Class B No. 4 Grand Island Northwest at halftime before losing 26-8.

Northwest took a 9-8 lead into the fourth quarter after Parker Janky kicked his third field goal. He added a fourth midway through the final quarter, tying a Class B record for most field goals in a game.

Points aplenty for Cambridge

Cambridge, ranked 10th in Eight Man-1, keeps putting up big offensive numbers. On Friday, it defeated Ansley-Litchfield 68-22.

Cambridge is averaging 79.3 points through three games.

A year ago, Cambridge went 5-4 and averaged 43 points a game. The Trojans scored at least 29 in every game in 2018.

Mimick hits milestone

David City Aquinas coach Ron Mimick won his 300th career game as the Monarchs downed Ponca 49-6. Mimick has a 252-71 record at Aquinas.
