COUNCIL BLUFFS — After allowing two goals in the first two minutes of a season-opening 3-0 loss to Council Bluffs Lewis Central, Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln was looking for a better start this time around against the Titans.

The Lynx got it with the help of a 19 mph wind at their backs in the first half, taking a 2-0 lead into halftime.

Hunter Hendrix scored two goals, and Hampus Jacobsson added another to help lift A.L. to a 3-2 win over L.C. in the CBTJ Boys Varsity Soccer Classic at Gale Wickersham Stadium.

The win was the fourth consecutive for Lincoln (5-4-0) and ended a four-match Titan shutout streak.

A.L. coach Jamison Parkhill said the win was redemption for the loss on April 4.

“My captains chose the wind. We definitely put the pressure on them, and I think it led directly to the first two goals,” Parkhill said.

“We've been playing a whole lot better since that loss. It was kind of awesome to end their shutout streak that they've been on. So that was another cherry on top,” he added.

It also helped that the Lynx were able to keep better tabs on L.C. leading scorer Luis Espino, who scored all three goals in the first meeting, including one 16 seconds in.

Espino assisted on a goal by Adam Mortensen and just missed a goal when he rang a shot off the post in the second half against the Lynx.

“He's a very dangerous player,” Parkhill said of Espino.

“He likes to drift out wide, and we were doing a very good job of tracking him.”

L.C. coach James Driver said that although the wind was a factor in the first half, his team didn't show up ready to play with the intensity it needed to for a city match.

“We just came out flat in the first half. They wanted it more than we did. They were probably hungry after the first meeting that we had didn't go their way,” Driver said.

The first goal came in the 16th minute on a penalty kick by Hendrix after a controversial handball was called on a Titan defender in the penalty area.

Driver and L.C. keeper Cole Jensen disagreed with the call, and Jensen was given a yellow card after the goal for arguing.

Jacobsson made it 2-0 1:20 later on a blast from the right wing.

“I felt like the first PK call that was made was extremely weak,” Driver said.

“The second goal was fabulous by them. Nothing taken away from that goal.".

Hendrix got his second goal with 9:29 left in the game after the Titans (4-2-0) had cut the lead to 2-1 on the Mortensen score 2:32 earlier.

Jensen attempted a clearance, but the ball hit Hendrix in the face and landed behind Jensen.

Hendrix kept with it and finished to put the Lynx up 3-1.

“It just came my way. I was lucky. It was good to have it,” Hendrix said.
