COUNCIL BLUFFS — First-year Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln coach Katie Darrington did not distribute name tags when her team first gathered for preseason volleyball workouts this summer.

But with four freshmen now firmly in the rotation and a fifth suiting varsity, you can understand the growing pains that come with meshing those baby faces with three seniors and four juniors.

“At first it took us a while to warm up to each other,” A.L. senior Kelsey Floerchinger said. “But now we’re getting along better and we’re working together as a team a lot better.”

That was evident on Thursday, as Floerchinger smacked a team-high nine kills in the Lynx’s Missouri River Conference-opening 25-15, 25-19, 25-23 win over Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson.

On the eve of the A.L.-T.J. football clash, both student sections were large and loud. Abraham Lincoln went on a 12-1 run in the opener to lead 22-10 behind three aces each from ShaAnn Beaman and Cailey Schaa, as the Jackets struggled with their passing.

In set two, Thomas Jefferson rallied from a 12-4 deficit with a 13-3 run to lead 17-15. But the visitors scored 10 of the final 12, with junior Miranda Hennings and freshman Julia Wagoner registering two kills each late to close it out.

At 23-all in the third set, Thomas Jefferson missed a serve and then made a passing error to end the match.
