Defense, height send Titans back to state

COUNCIL BLUFFS — With the clock winding down and the outcome already determined, Council Bluffs Lewis Central was able to enjoy the chants echoing from the student section at the end of Tuesday’s 50-33 win over ADM in the Class 4-A, Region 8 final.

“State! State! State!”

When the buzzer sounded a few seconds later, L.C. students and players met for a midcourt celebration of the Titans’ fifth state berth in school history and first since 2013.

L.C. earned the Des Moines trip behind its trademark stout defense. ADM was limited to 30 percent shooting from the field (13 of 43) and 12 percent from beyond the arc (2 of 16).

“Our defense was pretty special tonight,” coach Derek Archer said. “For about three-and-a-half quarters, ADM struggled to get much, and that’s got to be a credit to (our defense). They were playing hard, playing aggressive. I can’t be more proud of the way they played.”

Second-ranked Lewis Central (20-1) will face No. 8 Pella (21-2) at 10 a.m. March 2 in the opening round of the 4-A tourney at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

Tuesday marked the Titans’ 13th consecutive victory. They haven’t lost a game in 2016.

Archer last took L.C. to state four years ago in his first season as coach.

In addition to its defense Tuesday, L.C. benefited from two key factors: post play and the performance of point guard Kye Madsen.

With six players listed at 5-foot-10 or taller, L.C. held a clear size advantage over ADM, which had one such player.

Maegan Holt, a 5-11 forward, led the Titans with 14 points despite dealing with foul trouble for much of the first half. While Holt sat in the second quarter, 6-foot forward Whitney Wilson scored seven of her 11 points, helping the Titans build a 21-13 halftime advantage.

“We knew that they didn’t have a lot of size, and that wouldn’t be a big problem with us,” Holt said. “We just tried to use that to our advantage.”
