Cyclones start fast in win, end another season at state

HARLAN, Iowa — Jordyn Moser and Taylor Frederick agree: It never gets old.

Neither Harlan Community senior knows anything other than ending a high school basketball season at the state tournament.

Both four-year varsity regulars savored the festivities one more time following a 55-32 victory over unrated Spencer in the Iowa Class 4-A, Region 1 final Tuesday night. In all, five of the team’s six seniors scored in their last home game to help third-ranked Harlan advance to the girls state tournament for a fourth straight season and 13th time overall.

“I started here my freshman year,” Moser said, “and this is exactly where I wanted to end.”

Moser led all scorers with 15 points — 12 in the first half — while Frederick and fellow senior Emma Ahrenholtz joined her in double figures with 14 and 12, respectively. Moser, a 5-foot-7 guard, darted through the lane for a series of layups and stole the ball for a few more easy finishes.

Harlan (20-2) opened with a 15-1 lead and cruised from there. Spencer (14-8) drew within 25-17 on an Ally Schlaeger 3-pointer midway through the second quarter, but the hosts scored 13 unanswered points into the second half to put the game out of reach.

The two-time defending state champs won their 12th straight postseason game as they make their return to Des Moines. They meet No. 7 Marion (19-4) in a 4-A state quarterfinal March 2 at 11:45 a.m. at Wells Fargo Arena.

“It’s the best part of the season,” Frederick said. “This is what we work for every year. Now the real season starts, is what we say.”
