How he got here: Nebraska pried him from a handful of Big Ten West schools. The Huskers began recruiting Newsom when they offered him in February 2018. That was about the time Newsom’s recruitment began heating up. He was being pursued hard at the time by Minnesota and Iowa State, and Northwestern offered him in March. Newsom visited Nebraska in March and twice in April, including the spring game. An offer from Michigan State came June 21, but it was too late. Newsom committed to Nebraska on June 23.

Our take: If you want to win the Big Ten, you have to stop the run, and getting Newsom helps that endeavor. It is telling that prototypical Big Ten West programs like Iowa, Northwestern and Michigan State — three teams who build programs off stopping the run — were after Newsom. For Nebraska to land him out of Iowa is significant.

They said it: “For sure, Iowa is a great school. But my first college football game was a Nebraska football game, so it was something that I just wanted to do. I just used this July (dead) period to think and pray on things. I just realized Nebraska was the place for me.” — Newsom on why he picked Nebraska
