How he got here: Nelson only had three scholarship offers, but that’s largely because other schools knew they weren’t flipping the lifelong Husker fan who committed a week after attending a “Friday Night Lights” camp in June 2017. The son of former NU All-America wrestler Chris Nelson projects as an outside linebacker following a senior season in which he made 74 tackles in 13 games at defensive end. Nelson was the first pledge of the 2019 class and joins York’s Garrett Snodgrass as the only incoming players who originally committed to previous coach Mike Riley.
Our take: The statistics don’t necessarily jump out, but Nelson affected quarterback play throughout his prep career, thanks to an unrelenting motor that is evident throughout his highlight film. Nelson will benefit from enrolling early and has the attitude and measurables to eventually embody the best qualities of the Blackshirt tradition. In the short term, how well he can drop into coverage will mark whether he stays at outside linebacker or takes the Ben Stille route to defensive end. No matter how much he sees the field, he has the kind of Husker passion that will make a difference internally.
They said it: “I can’t wait to wear that N on my helmet. I’ve got a lot of work ahead. I’ve got to worry about doing things right, going to class on time and playing my guts out every single play and every drill in practice. When my time comes I have to seize my moment. It’s going to be a special couple years here.” — Nelson on his future at Nebraska
