Scouting Nebraska (24-18): The Huskers are celebrating their 500th game at Haymarket Park on Friday and throughout the weekend. But NU coach Darin Erstad said that won't be the focus for a team that has lost three straight weekend series. "All that stuff makes for a good story but we need to go out and play like we can and play good baseball," Erstad said. "I didn't particularly think we did that, even in our (win) on Monday." ... Big Red is hitting .192 (11 for 57) with runners in scoring position over its last six games. It has committed 10 errors in the same span. ... Outfielder Joe Acker (.302 average, eight steals) will miss the series with a family obligation, Erstad said. Shortstop Spencer Schwellenbach (ankle) is day to day.
Scouting Arizona State (34-12): The Sun Devils won their first 21 games of the spring and were college baseball's last undefeated team. They are fifth in the Pac-12 Conference after dropping two of three to No. 1 UCLA last weekend. ... The offense is generating 8.7 runs per game, which ranks third nationally. And it's not small ball — it ranks third in both total homers (76) and slugging percentage (.525). Projected top-10 MLB draft pick Hunter Bishop is hitting .357 and owns 21 bombs — the same total as Nebraska's entire team. Trevor Hauver (11 homers) and Spencer Torkelson (17) are other top threats to go deep. ASU has six hitters batting .299 or better this spring. ... The team is 117th in earned-run average ( 4.59) and 70th in fielding percentage (.974).
Dugout chatter: Nebraska's lone College World Series victory came against Arizona State, a 5-3 result in 2005. ASU eliminated the Huskers a few days later with an 8-7 win in 11 innings. The teams have played just once since, with the Sun Devils prevailing 19-7 in a 2007 NCAA regional. ... This series came about in part because of the relationship between Erstad and ASU coach Tracy Smith, the 2013 National Coach of the Year who was at Big Ten rival Indiana from 2006-14. Nebraska will play at Tempe next season. ... D1Baseball.com has the Huskers among its "first five out" for the NCAA tournament. NU has an RPI of 44 ahead of series with ASU (36) and Michigan (38).
