1941 Rose Bowl.Al Zikmund

Al Zikmund heads for the goal line with a Nebraska touchdown during the Huskers' loss to Stanford in the Rose Bowl after the 1940 season.

Al Zikmund, who played on a Rose Bowl team for Nebraska and spent 32 years at Kearney State as a football coach and athletic director, died Monday in Kearney. He was 95.

Zikmund is a member of the UNK Hall of Fame and Nebraska Football Hall of Fame, voted into the latter as a coach in 1977.

Zikmund, from Ord, lettered on the Nebraska football team from 1940 to 1942, and is the youngest player in Rose Bowl history to catch a touchdown pass. The Huskers took an 8-1 record to Pasadena for the game after the 1940 season, where they lost 21-13 to No. 2-ranked Stanford.

At Kearney State — now the University of Nebraska at Kearney — Zikmund posted a 121-31-3 record as football coach from 1955 to 1971, including unbeaten seasons in 1956, '58 and '67 and 11 conference titles.

He was then Kearney State athletic director from 1971 until retiring in 1987.

Zikmund was a halfback for the Huskers. He is the youngest player in Rose Bowl history to catch a touchdown pass, pulling in a 33-yard throw from Herm Rohrig in the second quarter that gave NU a 13-7 lead on Stanford.

Zikmund was put on the 2018 ballot for the College Football Hall of Fame. He also coached at Alliance High and Grand Island High prior to going to Kearney State.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
