The PCL’s top player in April has carried his hot start into May.

Round Rock outfielder Yordan Alvarez homered to cap a four-run sixth inning that helped the first-place Express (19-13) sneak past Omaha 9-7 in the second game of their series at Werner Park on Wednesday night.

Alvarez, the reigning league player of the month and player of the week, recorded a home run in a multihit game for the eighth time this season. He leads the PCL in homers (14) and RBIs (40).

The Cuban slugger, who reached on a bunt single in the first, is second in the league in batting average at .391. That puts him four spots ahead of Omaha’s Bubba Starling, who is at .371 after a four-hit night.

Nicky Lopez had three hits and reached base five times for the Chasers (14-19). The former Creighton star and Starling each drove in three runs in a game that Omaha led until the decisive sixth.

Lopez slugged a 408-foot, two-run homer in the first after the Chasers fell behind 2-0 early. The first of Starling’s three RBI singles came later that inning. He also drove in runs in the fifth and seventh innings.

Omaha starter Scott Blewett (2-3) suffered the loss though he left in a 5-5 game. Reliever Ben Lively, sent down from Kansas City on Tuesday, inherited his runner at second base then gave up an RBI single.

Alvarez followed with a blast to right field that extended the lead to three. Round Rock, which got four hits from Alex De Goti, held off the Chasers from there. Dean Deetz (2-0) got the win after Omaha stranded four runners in scoring position over the final three innings. Kent Emanuel picked up the save.
