Cardinals claim district on senior’s game-winner

  • 0

GLENWOOD, Iowa — It depended on your seat — or your allegiance.

It was a block. Or a charge.

It was neither. And so Treynor senior Matthew Deitchler powered through the contact and softly banked in a 6-footer with two seconds remaining, propelling the Iowa No. 4 Cardinals to a 51-49 Class 2-A district boys basketball final victory over Shenandoah on Tuesday at the Glenwood High School gymnasium.

Deitchler was asked if he was expecting a whistle after Shenandoah’s Austin Fichter tried to draw the charge.

“No, not really,” Deitchler said. “I was listening for one, but there wasn’t, so I was just waiting for the buzzer then.”

Treynor, the defending 2-A state champion, improved to 21-2 and will meet Carroll Kuemper (17-6) on Saturday at 7 p.m. in Harlan for a trip to state.

It was a bitter pill to swallow for the western Iowa No. 6 Mustangs (13-9), who are in the midst of a hoops revival. When the current seniors were freshmen, Shenandoah was finishing a seven-year run of 1-104 in Hawkeye Ten Conference play.

Several of the Mustangs were still sobbing as they left the locker room.

“It just says a lot about who they are,” Shenandoah coach Jason Shaffer said. “It’s kind of the way our seniors have been for three years. There’s a lot of fight in the Mustangs, and that’s the reason why I think we’ve turned that program around.”

Things didn’t look rosy for Shenandoah with 1:45 remaining, after Nolan Chapman’s basket put Treynor ahead 48-37. The 6-foot-1, 245-pound Fichter led the comeback, hitting three free throws to start the rally and then an NBA 3 to cut it to 49-45 with 50.8 seconds left.

Chapman, a 6-2 senior, led Treynor with 25 points and seven rebounds. Deitchler added 11 points and six rebounds, and Dillon Faubel made 3 of 7 from deep for nine points.
