Blue Devils go for 2 and convert to slay Dragons

  • 0

Gage Orton owned the night for Plattsmouth, but it was his quarterback who locked up the win Friday at Gretna.

Blue Devil quarterback Dawson Siemonsma threw a touchdown and a two-point conversion pass to give sixth-ranked Plattsmouth the 50-49 double-overtime win over the No. 3 Dragons in a matchup of unbeatens.

While Siemonsma finished the win, Orton was the main cog in the Blue Devils’ machine all night. The senior back ran for 275 yards on 34 carries to go with five touchdowns.

“He’s part workhorse and part thoroughbred,” Plattsmouth coach Bob Dzuris said. “He has some long runs where he looked like a thoroughbred but the rest of the game he was a workhorse.

“We had to lean on some other guys at the end and, fortunately, it worked.”

The Blue Devils opened up a 35-19 lead with seven minutes left in the game on a Siemonsma rushing touchdown. Gretna quickly scored on a pass from quarterback Jared Samuelson to Emmitt Knight and added a two-point conversion to cut the deficit to 35-27.

With a chance to run some of the 6 minutes and 30 seconds off the clock, the Blue Devils instead threw an interception on their second play from scrimmage.

After the Plattsmouth defense forced Gretna into a turnover on downs, the Dragons got the ball back with 1:21 left. Samuelson led a precise 10-play, 65-yard drive to tie the game with a touchdown pass and two-point pass to Chase Templeman.

The teams traded scores in the first overtime, and Gretna quickly scored first in the second overtime.

On second down, Plattsmouth was sacked for a 13-yard loss, but on the next play Siemonsma hit Noah Sabatka for a 23-yard score. Instead of prolonging the game, Dzuris and the Blue Devils went for two and got it when Siemonsma found Zach Brant for the two-point conversion and win.

Siemonsma racked up 101 yards on eight completions.

Plattsmouth’s biggest accomplishment was holding leading Class B rusher Knight to just 40 yards on 13 carries, although he did score a pair of TDs.

It has Plattsmouth going into district play full of confidence.

“We have a big head of steam going into districts,” Orton said. “We haven’t even played a complete four-quarter game yet either, so there’s no telling what we’re capable of.”
