Physicians, advanced clinicians and other health care professionals have a new educational option to expand their knowledge and reach new career heights.
Creighton University has developed an all-new Executive MBA in Healthcare Management program, designed for clinicians who manage departments and physicians who aspire to departmental or organizational leadership, are serving on leadership committees, or manage private practices or other entrepreneurial ventures.
Health care administrators who wish to expand their knowledge base and academic preparation, or advance to higher levels of career rank, will find the program appealing, the university says.
“We see a profoundly compelling need in the marketplace to equip physicians and healthcare leaders to rise to the increasing challenges of the industry,” says Creighton University Heider College of Business’ Laurie Baedke, MHA, FACHE, FACMPE, director of healthcare leadership programs. “We have a platform to build and deliver a robust and engaging educational experience to meet these challenges.”
“Our primary target student is a physician, other advanced clinician – dentist, nurse practitioner, pharmacist, physical therapist, occupational therapist, etc. – or a healthcare executive,” Baedke says. “Any of those individuals who desire to acquire an advanced degree to expand their business acumen, deepen their professional impact and accelerate their career success is a terrific fit for the Executive MBA in Healthcare program.”
The accelerated, 18-month program blends an online learning format with four, four-day campus-based residencies and is designed to attract students nationwide. It is tailored to the adult learner looking for the flexibility of online coursework and the network-building benefits of campus instruction.
The program launches in October, and 15 students will make up the inaugural cohort. Baedke expects enrollment to grow to 20 in the program’s second year and 25 in its third year.
The learning model is progressive, enrolling both clinicians and non-clinicians, and immersing students in on-campus residencies alongside online platforms. It employs a “flipped” classroom model – meaning students listen to class lectures and prepare for class on their own, then master the material with hands-on projects in the classroom where they can ask questions and discover through doing.
In addition to Creighton professors, Baedke has enlisted the help of prominent practitioners and content industry experts as adjunct faculty and guest lecturers.
While housed within Creighton’s Heider College of Business, the program, like medicine itself, is highly collaborative. Program participants gain additional exposure to educational professionals from Creighton’s other schools and colleges, including the School of Medicine, School of Dentistry, College of Nursing and the School of Pharmacy and Health Professions.
Students also will benefit from Creighton’s Jesuit foundation, Baedke says. Healing, caring for the whole person, striving for excellence, being men and women for and with others – these Jesuit charisms seamlessly integrate into health care professions, she says.
“The framework for learning that focuses not just on intellectual and academic formation but on personal and spiritual formation is perfectly aligned with the nature of health care,” Baedke says.
