For those who are looking to fulfill a New Year’s resolution of reading more, there’s still time to signup for Baright Public Library’s annual Winter Reading Program.
Now through Jan. 31, children, teens and adults have the opportunity to take part and challenge themselves as readers.
Participants are encouraged to read a total of 10 hours for a chance to win prizes. Pre-readers who are not yet ready for chapter books must read 20 books to get a prize.
Those who reach the reading hours or book requirement will receive hot chocolate packets and cookies from the library.
Children who reach their goal can also win a winter-themed picture book, however supplies are limited. When adults complete the program, their names are put into a drawing for every book review they complete throughout the challenge for a chance to win a grand prize of a gift card.
There will also be a weekly drawing for adults and winners will receive a free book.
Participants have the option to participate online at ralstonlibrary.beanstack.org or with a paper log which can be picked up at the library.
One tip Justin Ridder, youth services librarian/assistant director, said she gives patrons is to focus on beating their goal from last year. She also suggests keeping books readily available.
“I would recommend everyone to be sure to leave a book on their nightstand for the mornings where you are cozy warm under the blankets and don’t want to get out of bed,” she said.
“All you have to do is reach over to grab your book and continue in your warm cocoon.”
As reading logs fill up and beloved books are returned to the shelves, Ridder said she enjoys watching people of all ages complete the annual challenge.
Ridder said overall she hopes the community learns to appreciate reading throughout the year.
“I love giving children and parents activities to do while they are winter break,” she said.
“We push the Summer Reading Program so much, but I want to make sure that children and adults know how important it is to read all year.”
