Despite the cold weather, we had a good group at the Ralston American Legion on Jan. 23.

Joann Stenberg was feeling better and back at her usual table. We enjoyed the food thanks to the team of Larry Pallet and Paul Linnell. There were bingo winners all around the room and we all enjoyed a special treat of birthday cake. Jerry Fouts celebrated his 86th birthday and Margaret and Scott served cake to everyone.

The cake was decorated in red, white and blue — blue for Creighton, complete with little basketballs, and red for the Huskers, complete with little footballs. It was delicious. Good thing we enjoyed ourselves that evening because the next day, the extreme cold canceled the special Veterans Dinner and bingo and our fun night out.

Saint Gerald Friends on Q seniors social group wisely did not plan a January event due to unpredictable weather but has been working hard on the 2019 schedule, which can be found on the Church Notes page. Some fun events are planned.

The Ralston Senior Center was filled with family and friends of Joan Bauer on Jan. 27. Family consisted of four children, 13 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, her brother, nieces and nephews. It was truly a celebration of life. Joan was a resident of Ralston House and had many friends who remembered fun times together. She also would assist me at the desk on Wednesdays when needed.

We had a great turnout as 12 people attended exercise class on Jan. 29, and then because of the extreme cold, schools were closed again on Jan. 30, as was the senior center. The Dancing Grannies that had been scheduled to perform for us were rescheduled and will perform on March 6.

We do look forward to a warm up and getting back on our regular schedule. This winter weather is putting a crimp in our social lives. It sure is a blessing to be retired and be able to cancel our events compared to when I was working and would take a change of clothes and extra food in case I got stuck at the hospital.

At exercise class on Feb. 1, we compared notes on how we spent our time when it was too cold to go out. Grace Engelmann worked on puzzles, Cece Hendricks worked on cleaning out things, Jan Gorman did a lot of reading and Evelyn Vogler watched a lot of television.

The bus trip to Sloan, Iowa, and the WinnaVegas Casino will be Feb. 13. Call Dorothy at 402-553-4874 to reserve your seat.

The February calendars are on the back table. Due to the senior center being closed on Jan. 30, the menus have changed. The menus for the remainder of the month are: Feb. 13 — Cheeseburger, macaroni salad and Jell-o. Feb. 20 — Pulled pork sandwiches, pasta salad and pudding. Feb. 27 — Salisbury steak, gravy, baked potato and fruit. We will be entertained by Joyce Torchia on the 13th. Be sure to call Diane at 402-885-8895 to make your reservation.

Thank you for your comments. You know how to reach me.
