The dinner on May 29 for Veterans was held at and hosted by the Ralston American Legion Post 373. This is done on the fifth Wednesday of every month with five Wednesdays. Volunteers pick up and return the veterans to the Eastern Nebraska Veterans Home. In the past a special meal was served and last month the veterans were able to choose what they wanted to eat. Veterans enjoy the outing and getting to play bingo afterwards. An error in the headline of the June 12 version of this column stated that they were hosted by the senior center.
The June trip to Sloan, Iowa, and the WinnaVegas Casino was interesting. Dorothy said they had a new bus driver from California, not familiar with Nebraska. The College World Series had all the regular drivers booked. Dorothy still managed to get a hug.
There were some winners and losers but seniors enjoyed the outing and are looking forward to the next trip on July 9. The bus leaves the senior center parking lot at 7:30 a.m. Call Dorothy at 402-553-4874 to reserve a seat.
Jan Gorman stated that this will be the 20th year for Ralston’s Picnic in the Park Pie baking contest. It is also the Baright Public Library’s 20th year. Trinity United Methodist Church will be providing the food which includes sloppy Joe’s, chips and new this year, nachos, for purchase at the picnic.
The Pie and Ice Cream Social will feature a huge assortment of pies as well as ice cream. Donated additional pies are always welcome. While there will not be a quilt show at the library there will be an exhibit from the SAC Museum.
There were lots of nice prizes at the senior center bingo party on June 13. Dorothy Schultz was our bingo caller and we had cookies and ice tea for refreshments. My winning streak was back as I added some bright colorful towels to my linen drawer. The bingo party for tomorrow (Thursday) was canceled due to a celebration of life event for Lois Sorensen. The next Thursday bingo party will be at 1 p.m. on July 11. Come join us.
June 19 was birthday cake day at the senior center. Diane West took the group picture which is posted on the hall bulletin board. Pictured are June Anderson, Maxine Rye, Lorin “Ole” Swingen, Diane Walters, Jan Cline and Janet Rentko. Also celebrating a June birthday but not pictured are Larry Dyer, Don Groesser and Karen Sorensen. After lunch, we enjoyed cake and ice cream. Jan Cline provided the ice cream and a variety of cakes, homemade as well as store bought, were provided by Helen Savich (for Janet Rentko), Ole Swingen, Maxine Rye, Karen Sorensen, June Anderson and Diane Walters.
Diane West reported that the senior center received a generous check from the Wiebe Foundation which will be used to cover some big expenses and also a check from the Knights of Columbus which will be used for members’ lunches someday in the future.
Bonnie Wolf has returned after spending some time with her daughter in Estes Park, Colo. Bonnie said she had a wonderful time and got to see a lot of wildlife.
Over at the Ralston American Legion, the team of Paul Linnell and Larry Pallet has been providing us with a full menu of good food on Wednesday evenings and our bingo caller, Cora Mather, helps us have a fun time. We have winners all around the room and look forward to our candy bars or nuts prizes. Last week Larry and Marilyn Dyer brought daughter Heather and her family to join us. As happens, beginners luck, and they did quite well at that table. I brought a birthday cake and we all got to enjoy birthday cake again for dessert.
The menus for next month are on the back table at the senior center. July 3 will be Salisbury steak with marinara sauce, baked potato and fruit. July 10 — BBQ chicken on a bun, baked beans and coleslaw. July 17 — Roast pork, mashed potatoes, gravy and vegetable. July 24 — Mostaccioli with meat sauce, salad and fruit. July 31 — Meatloaf, gravy, whipped potatoes and broccoli. Call Diane at 402-885-8895 to make your reservation.
