Hello! First and foremost, I want to introduce myself as I am new to Baright Public Library this summer.

As a student at UNO, I was given the opportunity to intern with Baright this summer and I’m eager to help with and participate in all the fun events happening at the library. In addition to assisting and learning from those working at Baright, I will also be keeping you up to date on the events happening in and around the library over the course of the summer.

Along with my arrival this summer comes new and exciting events at the library. Our Summer Reading Program is in full swing and our theme this year is “A Universe of Stories.” This program goes through July 31, so be sure to register whether you’re a kid, teen, or adult as there are plenty of activities and opportunities to win prizes just for reading. This year, the library also has a slew of activities for adults, because why should kids get to have all the fun? Participate in a scavenger hunt where clues take you to various locations in Ralston or figure out which constellation is posted in the library each week to be entered into the grand prize drawing. More information about these activities as well as others can be found on the library’s website at ralstonlibrary.org.

This week also marked the start of the Kids Cruisin’ Kitchen, where Baright will once again serve as a host site. This program is made possible by the Salvation Army and the Food Bank for the Heartland and will run through Aug. 8. Children 18-and-under are eligible to receive a free meal from the lunch truck, which will be in the library parking lot from 12:45 to 1:15 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Prepare to be amazed as you join us today, Wednesday, for the spectacular Jeff Quinn Magic Show. Kids and parents alike are invited to watch and be dazzled by the tricks and presentation that is sure to be mind-blowing. Admission to this event is free and will begin at 1:30 p.m.

Thursdays are when teen events take place this summer, so come on out Thursday for Space Games at Wildewood Park. Teens can hang out, enjoy snacks, and partake in space themed field games such as capture the martian and asteroid launch. This event is sure to be a blast and kicks off at 6 p.m.

Are you new to Medicare and finding yourself confused and full of questions? Volunteers Assisting Seniors is here to help. On Thursday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. VAS will be at Baright to offer insight into the decisions those with Medicare will need to make along with answering any other questions or concerns people may have. While this event is free of charge, you must register to attend. Class size is limited so be sure to call VAS at 402-444-6617 or register online at vas-medicare-class.eventbrite.com so you don’t miss out on this informative event.

Something new being offered this summer is adult game night, the first of which will take place on Tuesday. Bring your own board games or use the ones provided by the library and join us for an evening of fun beginning at 7 p.m.

On June 12 the Douglas-Sarpy 4-H staff will be hosting a babysitting clinic at the library. Come and share your ideas about babysitting and learn basic first aid training, how to select the right babysitting jobs for you, and how to advertise your babysitting services. Those interested must be at least 11 years old and will need to register for the event as the maximum number of attendees is 25. Those attending will also need to bring a sack lunch or can utilize our lunch truck. This clinic will run from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Our Lunch and Learn over mindfulness will take place on June 13 at noon. Join CHI Health program specialist Linda Dempsey as she discusses mindfulness and techniques that will help you in your everyday life. This event is free and open to the public and refreshments will be provided.

Want to stay up to date on all the fun events and programs happening at the library? Don’t forget to sign up to receive our e-newsletter. The newsletter contains information regarding upcoming events, like our Out and About Storytime at Ralston Park on Thursday or our Curious George Storytime on Friday, both of which will begin at 10:30 a.m.

As always, there are tons of events and activities going on at Baright, especially now that summer is here. We look forward to seeing you so make sure you stop in, whether it’s to check out a new book or to participate in one of the many events we have going on.
