Papio-LE

Papillion-La Vista's Catherine Boatwright clears the ball from the Papio side of the field during Thursday's state tournament game against Lincoln East.

A late Lincoln East goal was the difference in Papillion-La Vista’s 1-0 loss in the first round of the state soccer tournament Thursday.

The Monarchs end the season with a 12-6 record.

Highlights: The first half saw Lincoln East in control of the ball most of the way but the Spartans didn’t have much to show for it. Both teams totaled three shots on goal as neither team created many easy scoring opportunities.

Both teams dodged a bullet in the first 10 minutes of the second half. Five minutes into the second, Monarch goalkeeper Miller Swift beat a Spartan to the ball after two East players got behind the Monarch defense.

A couple minutes later, Sammy Marek got a head on a corner but it sailed wide.

The rest of the half featured a game mostly played near midfield untold the last 10 minutes where East started creating more scoring chances.

The Spartans scored the game-winner with just 2:46 left on the clock. The converted a deep free kick into a goal after the ball bounced around in the box a couple times.

Top performers: Mollee Swift had a few vital saves at goalkeeper for the Monarchs in the second half to keep the game scoreless.

The Papio midfielder crew of Sammy Marek, Chloe Dietz, Allie Hinman and Lauren Schmidt were strong for the Monarchs.

From the coach: "Unfortunate handball call and we just couldn't get the ball off the line (on the goal). I think we were matched up pretty evenly. We just couldn't get our attack together enough today."

- Papio coach April Kelcher
