Three area wrestlers advanced to the semifinals of the Class A State Wrestling Tournament.
The semifinals are scheduled for Friday at 5 p.m. at the CenturyLink Center.
Highlights: Papillion-La Vista's Thomas Cahill and Brandon Sorgenfrei advanced to Friday's semifinal round with two wins Thursday. Cahill (132-pound division) won an 8-1 decision over Zack Kuta of Grand Island to advance to the semis while Sorgenfrei (160) won a 9-4 decision over Zach Baldwin of Columbus.
Bellevue West's Ryan Smales (120) won a 5-4 decision over Joshua Via of Elkhorn South. Smales will be the Thunderbirds' lone representative in the semis.
All four of Bellevue East's wrestlers competing for a semifinal appearance lost in their quarterfinal matches. Despite losing in the quarterfinals by sudden victory to Millard West's Zack Sorich, Bellevue East's Jacob Packard (195) beat Metro Conference Champion Jaylin Bradley of Bellevue West in a 13-12 decision.
Top Performers: Cahill won his first round match by major decision (11-2) and almost notched another with his quarterfinal win. Sorgenfrei also posted a major decision in his first round match.
From the coaches: "He's been wrestling really good lately," Bellevue West coach Jerry Schumacher said of Smales. "He was really focused today. He knew what he needed to do and he really went after it today."
Monarch coach Braumon Creighton was pleased with his two state semifinalists: "I feel really good about Thomas and he's wrestling at his best right now.
"That's what we expected out of Brandon. He has high expectations and he's right where he expects to be."
