Meet A Teacher

Name: Andrew Boone

School: Thomas Elementary

What do you teach? First grade

Experience: I have taught six years in Gretna Public Schools – all at Thomas Elementary. I have taught five years in first grade and one year in fifth grade.

Hobbies: During the summertime, I like to garden and simply spend time outdoors with my family. Other hobbies I have include running, reading and watching football.

Who or what influenced you to become an educator? I grew up in a family of “teachers.” My dad is a pastor, my mom is a coordinator for an alternative high school and my brother is a middle-school teacher. In some sense, you could say I was destined to be an educator. In addition, my high-school math teacher, Mrs. Bonestroo, inspired me with her dedication to her students. I always aspire to be more like her and my family in my teaching.

How do you spend your summer vacation? I enjoy spending time with my wife and daughter. Whether it is traveling to see other family or enjoying the outdoors around Gretna, it is largely spent being together as a family.

What’s the most rewarding part of being an educator? The most rewarding part of being an educator is the process of watching students grow academically and as children. Seeing their small successes mount to even greater rewards outside the walls of school is inspiring. Being a small part of their growth and watching them succeed within first grade and beyond is truly a rewarding experience.

If I weren’t a teacher, I’d be... I would be an occupational therapist. It is what I initially intended to do as an undergraduate before I fell in love with education.
