Name: Brenda Roach

What do you teach? I teach fifth grade at Avery Elementary.

Experience: I am completing my 33rd year of teaching in Bellevue Public Schools. Between special education and regular education, I have taught every elementary grade level except sixth. Before our daughter was born, I coached both girls golf and tennis at Bellevue East High School.

Hobbies: My hobbies are yoga, golf, tennis, traveling and reading. Not cooking.

Who or what influenced you to become an educator? Teaching others has always come easily to me. It’s my spiritual gift. I suppose I began to seriously consider it as a career when a high school English teacher told me she thought I’d be a good teacher.

How do you spend your summer vacation? Summers are spent with family and friends. We invest a lot of time taking our daughter to tennis and golf tournaments. The Jersey shore is an annual summer destination, along with an “educational” vacation.

What’s the most rewarding part of being an educator? Without a doubt, it’s getting to know the students each year. They make me laugh everyday.

If I weren’t a teacher, I’d be ... a pharmaceutical rep. That always sounded like a fun job to me.
