Name: Lanette Starbuck

What do you teach? First grade at Peter Sarpy Elementary.

Experience: This is my 18th year with Bellevue Public Schools. I taught kindergarten for seven years before moving to first grade. My education includes a bachelor’s degree from the University of Nebraska at Omaha and a master’s degree from Doane College.

Hobbies: As a mother of three daughters, anything my girls are interested in also becomes a hobby of mine. I love reading, always have. Nothing beats a great book.

My husband would tell you that shopping is my hobby of choice. I believe teaching is my true hobby. I am always working on ways to be a better educator and improving my classroom.

Who or what influenced you to become an educator? I have always wanted to be a teacher. As I was growing up, people would often tell me how good I was with kids and encouraged me to pursue teaching. So, when I was 16, I applied at a daycare center and fell in love! I knew I was on the right path.

How do you spend your summer vacation? I teach summer school of course! I also spend time with my family. Every summer we go on a family trip with my mom, my sister and brother and their families.

My husband and I usually take our girls on a vacation as well. This summer we were thinking about visiting Colorado.

What’s the most rewarding part of being an educator? Making a difference in the lives of children and building a relationship of trust and caring with each of them. I love when they come to school and feel like a part of a team in our classroom.

It is so exciting when we all are willing to work hard to grow as learners. I get to watch them blossom into readers and be part of setting them up for success in the future.

If I weren’t a teacher, I’d be … working with children in some capacity.
