One person was killed early Wednesday morning in a head-on collision on the Kennedy Freeway between Chandler and Cornhusker roads.

According to the Sarpy County Sheriff's Office, it was reported at about 2:50 a.m. to area law enforcement agencies that a red vehicle was observed traveling south in the northbound lane of Interstate 480 near the Martha Street exit.

At 2:52 a.m., units for the Sheriff's Office and Bellevue Police Department came upon a crash scene on the Kennedy Freeway approximately one-half mile south of Chandler Road.

According to the Sheriff's Office report, a red 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee heading south in the northbound lane had struck head-on a northbound semitrailer truck. The Jeep was fully engulfed in flames and the Bellevue Fire Department responded to extinguish the fire.

The semitrailer, registered to Southway Carriers of Addison, Iowa, was driven by 52-year-old Milos Forcan of Des Moines. Forcan was transported by Sheriff's deputies to Nebraska Medicine-Bellevue but refused treatment.

One occupant was discovered in the Jeep. No other information is available for the driver of the Jeep pending identification and notification of relatives.

The southbound lanes of the Kennedy Freeway were closed until just after 7 a.m. and the northbound lanes reopened about an hour later.

The crash remains under investigation.
