Nebraska Attorney General Doug Peterson.

Nebraska Attorney General Doug Peterson has been commendably active in working with the Legislature on the opioid issue. It’s puzzling, though, that he hasn’t followed up by filing suit to hold opioid manufacturers accountable.

Forty-eight state attorneys general have done so, with Michigan expected to follow shortly, to help their states recover the costs of health care, law enforcement and social services. Douglas County has sued on the issue, citing “an enormous economic burden” from opioids. Four other Nebraska counties and the Ponca tribe also have filed suits.

Nebraska’s direct participation would serve the public interest here if an overall settlement is reached.
