A restaurant that was a longtime Millard favorite is reopening.
Bernie’s Pizza, which closed in Millard four years ago after close to 45 years in business, is reopening as a takeout-only spot.
The family is reopening the business in a new location, 13522 Cottner St., and Bernie Drassal’s nephew, Gene Branch, will run the new restaurant.
The restaurant will use all the same recipes as the former eatery, said Bridget Branch, who is married to Gene. The restaurant plans to open Wednesday, with a grand opening celebration starting Friday. Hours, for now, are 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.
The phone number to order will be 402-895-4433.
Drassal closed the original location in 2015 because of increasing rents. A new owner took over that location, near 136th and Q Streets, in 2016 but with a different menu. That location is now permanently closed.
Omaha's best pizza: Sarah Baker Hansen lists 8 of the top pies
I have lots of favorite pizzas in Omaha; anyone who loves food knows that our city is a bit crazy for this particular food. I've seen people actually get into arguments over the merits of Mama's versus La Casa. (Full disclosure: I'm on Team La Casa.)
This is just a small selection of the pizza joints I've reviewed during the past few years, plus a link to one of the best, most comprehensive Food Prowls we ever conducted.
