Chief Standing Bear, who 'changed the course of history,' is honored with statue in U.S. Capitol

Ponca Chief Standing Bear's speech in a landmark case led a federal judge in Omaha to rule that Native Americans were people within the meaning of the law. A statue of the chief was unveiled Wednesday in the U.S. Capitol's Statuary Hall, replacing a statue of William Jennings Bryan. Read more

State Corrections Director Scott Frakes said Wednesday's "first of its kind" operation had always been a part of the plan to rid the state's largest prison of contraband. On Monday, the Inspector General for Corrections released his annual report on prisons, a portion of which criticized corrections for locking down the State Pen earlier this month to search for contraband, but failing to search every housing unit. Report: Nebraska's juvenile probation showing progress at reducing services costs

A reduction in spending on group homes and institutions for treating youth accounted for almost all of the difference, the report said. The number of youth sent for such treatment dropped to 231 in fiscal year 2018, down from 424 two years earlier. In addition, the average cost of that treatment declined to $26,459 per youth, down from $33,987. Read more
