A woman died in a crash Monday night after her vehicle overturned in a field off Interstate 80 near Council Bluffs.

Melanie Thompson, 46, was traveling west on I-80 when, for an unknown reason, her vehicle left the roadway. The car went down an embankment and overturned, coming to a rest on its wheels in a field.

Authorities arrived to the scene at about 6:30 p.m.

Thompson, of Avoca, Iowa, was taken to Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs, where she was pronounced dead.

A passenger — 9-year-old Brianna Milledge, also of Avoca — survived the crash. She was taken to Children’s Hospital & Medical Center in Omaha.

Thompson and Brianna were both wearing seatbelts, according to the Iowa State Patrol.

Correction: An earlier version of this story stated Thompson was not wearing a seatbelt.
