A major summer bicycle trek across Iowa will again begin in Council Bluffs.
Ride officials announced Saturday night in Des Moines the route for the Register’s Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa, which begins July 21.
Riders will travel about 57 miles on the first day to Harlan. RAGBRAI will end July 27 in Fort Madison, ride officials said.
It is the shortest route in the ride’s history, the officials said.
It will be the second time in four years that Council Bluffs was chosen to kick off the annual ride and the sixth time since the ride began.
The city served as the starting point in 2009, shortly after the opening of the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge, which links Council Bluffs and Omaha. At that time, an estimated 15,000 riders and others descended on the metropolitan area for the kickoff.
The Council Bluffs side of the bridge was largely undeveloped in 2009. This year, River’s Edge Park, which will formally open in May, will be ready for riders.
