Omaha police say a 90-year-old Ralston woman was seriously injured Thursday afternoon in a one-vehicle traffic accident in which her van struck a power pole.

Police said the accident, which occurred at 2:22 p.m. at 91st and Q Streets, involved a 1991 Dodge minivan driven by Regina Heires that was westbound on Q Street.

Police said that according to witnesses, the van was traveling at a high rate of speed, and as it crested a hill, it swerved to avoid a vehicle in front of it. Heires overcorrected, lost control and struck a power pole, police said.

She was taken to Creighton University Medical Center in serious condition.

Heires suffered fractures to her lower extremities and a laceration to her head. Her injuries were not considered life-threatening.

The accident remains under investigation, police said.
