LINCOLN — Gov. Pete Ricketts promised his support Wednesday for Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential candidate.

“I will support the nominee of our party, and it looks like the nominee is going to be Donald Trump,” the state’s top Republican said.

Ricketts had declined to tip his hand previously in the GOP presidential primary.

However, his parents — Joe and Marlene Ricketts — actively fought the Trump nomination. They donated significant sums of cash to a super PAC that ran anti-Trump ads in Florida and elsewhere. The group also paid for anti-Trump direct mailings in Iowa.

Trump responded by issuing a veiled threat via his Twitter account in February, warning the family to be careful:

“I hear the Ricketts family, who own the Chicago Cubs, are secretly spending $’s against me. They better be careful, they have a lot to hide!”
