LINCOLN — Nebraska City real estate agent Janet Palmtag has announced her candidacy for the state legislative seat now held by Julie Slama of Peru.

The race sets up a contest between a candidate, Palmtag, who is endorsed by former Gov. Dave Heineman, against a candidate, Slama, who was appointed to her post by Gov. Pete Ricketts.

Both Heineman and Ricketts are Republicans. GOP Rep. Jeff Fortenberry has also endorsed Palmtag.

Palmtag, the married mother of three grown children, is the founder of a real estate firm and a former president of the Nebraska Realtors Association.

In a press release, Palmtag said that if elected she would seek to improve the “quality of life” for those in her southeast Nebraska district and help struggling farmers and ranchers.
