A 27-year-old Omaha man is being held in the Douglas County Jail in connection with a shooting early Sunday in which a 16-year-old girl was injured.

Officer Michael Pecha, a police spokesman, said the victim, Erika Garcia, was standing outside a home near 10th and Bancroft Streets about 2:20 a.m. when a car drove past and someone fired several shots. Garcia was treated for minor injuries at Creighton University Medical Center.

Police arrested Dusty L. Merrill in connection with the shooting. Merrill, who was found near 11th and D Streets, was booked at the Douglas County Jail on suspicion of using a gun to commit a felony, possession of a gun by a felon and first-degree assault.

Merrill is a convicted felon who spent nearly six years in the Nebraska prison system after being convicted in 2005 of robbery, being an accessory to a felony, second-degree assault and third-degree assault.

He currently is awaiting sentencing for his third drunken-driving conviction.
