Authorities said speed is believed to have been a factor in a one-vehicle crash Saturday about 5 miles north of Columbus that took the life of a 24-year-old Nebraska man.

Joseph Sullivan of Columbus was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Platte County Sheriff’s Office. The crash occurred just before 7 a.m. on 205th Avenue, about a half-mile north of 287th Street.

Sullivan was a passenger in a 2018 Dodge Durango driven by Martin Gomez, 31, of Columbus. Gomez was treated for minor injuries at Columbus Community Hospital and released.

Investigators determined that the SUV was going north on 205th Avenue at a high rate of speed when it went out of control and entered the east ditch. The vehicle traveled in the ditch until it hit the entrance to a field and then veered back onto the roadway.

The SUV rolled several times before coming to a rest in a field on the west side of 205th Avenue.

The crash remains under investigation, including use of seat belts. Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact the Platte County Sheriff’s Office at 402-564-3229 or Platte County Crime Stoppers at 402-563-4000.
