Two people died in a head-on collision Wednesday on Nebraska Highway 33 in Crete.

The collision occurred just before 3 p.m. between Betten and Iris Avenues on the east side of Crete, Police Chief Steve Hensel said.

Investigators determined that a 2002 Oldsmobile Alero driven by Clarence Patzloff, 57, of Milligan, Nebraska, was westbound on Highway 33 entering Crete when it crossed a turn lane, continued into the eastbound lane and struck a 2018 Ford F-150 pickup truck driven by Kevin Schwartzer, 55, of Omaha.

Patzloff and a passenger, Janice Silva, 85, also of Milligan, were pronounced dead at the scene. Schwartzer was flown by medical helicopter to Bryan West Medical Center in Lincoln.

The Crete Police Department and Nebraska State Patrol are continuing to investigate the crash.

“We don’t know why their car veered into the oncoming lane,” Hensel said. Autopsies have been scheduled.
