LINCOLN — The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services has filled another top medical post, promoting Dr. Alice Mitwaruciu to become the agency’s behavioral health administrator.

Mitwaruciu, who will be paid $138,000 a year, was the agency’s assistant behavioral health administrator. She joined Corrections in 2014 as a clinical psychologist at the Lincoln Correctional Center. Before that she worked at the Beatrice State Developmental Center.

The Corrections Department has been plagued by shortages in staff who provide required mental health and behavioral health care to inmates. State lawmakers were told about three weeks ago that fewer than half of the agency’s 23 slots for psychologists were filled, two psychiatrists have left in recent months, and the prison system’s medical director had retired.

Last week the agency hired a new medical director, Dr. Harbans Deol.
