A 70-year-old Beaver Lake man died after he tried to swim to his fishing boat, which had drifted away from him at the lake in Cass County.

Rescuers pulled Kirk M. Caven from the water Friday and took him by ambulance to the Bellevue Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office said.

Caven had been trying to launch his 16-foot 2010 Tracker fishing boat from a boat ramp when it drifted out onto the lake, about 8 miles south of Plattsmouth. He tried to swim from the dock to the boat but never made it.

Life jackets were found on the boat, but Caven did not have one on when he was found, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Employees at Beaver Lake Marina saw him floating in the water and called 911 about 8:30 a.m. They used their boats to assist rescue crews from the Sheriff’s Office, Murray Fire and Rescue, Plattsmouth Volunteer Fire Department and Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.
