Trooper who was killed in crash

An estimated 500 people attended the funeral of Trooper Jerry Smith.

The funeral for a Nebraska State Patrol trooper who was killed in a car crash will be Thursday in Scottsbluff.

Services for Trooper Jerry Smith will be at 1 p.m. in the gym at Western Nebraska Community College, 1601 E. 27th St., according to a State Patrol press release. The public is welcome to attend.

A procession from the funeral home to the college will be held before the service. Details on the route will be released later. Honor guards from the State Patrol and the U.S. Army will be at the ceremony.

On June 20, Smith was traveling on U.S. 26 about 2 miles west of Bridgeport when another vehicle crossed the center line and hit his cruiser head-on. Smith and the other driver died at the scene.

Smith served in the Army from 1986 to 2011. He joined the State Patrol in 2014 and graduated from its training program at age 47.

A wife and three children survive him.
