The sun crawls below the horizon as a thunderstorm rolls along near Alliance, Nebraska.

A quick trip through the Nebraska Sand Hills saturates the senses.

World-Herald reporter Joe Dejka captured some early summer scenes while on a three-day trip to the Sand Hills.

Dejka and a friend from San Diego, John Buchaca, intercepted a thunderstorm on Highway 2 just east of Alliance and documented it in a time-lapse video. They spent a morning with prairie dogs and bison at the Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge near Valentine.

And they cruised the back roads where dragonflies flitted on barbed wire and cattle crowded into marshy ponds to escape the midday heat.

They returned with some homemade jam, a few bug bites and a renewed sense of awe for this unique landscape.
