AAA motor club said Friday that an estimated 34.1 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more over the Labor Day holiday.

That would be a 4.2 percent increase over the 32.7 million people who traveled last year and the highest number of Labor Day travelers since 2008.

The expected increase in travelers is due to improving consumer confidence, AAA said.

Officials said 85 percent, or 29.2million people, are expected to travel by car.

Eight percent, or 2.6 million people, will travel by air. Others will travel by rail, bus or watercraft.
